Alongside our client work, we build and develop our own products and platforms too, so you'll have opportunities to contribute to both client systems and products we own ourselves.

The role

We're looking for a backend-focused Software Engineer to build and improve the systems behind our client platforms and products.

You'll work across application logic, APIs, databases, integrations, search, queues and background processing. PHP sits at the centre of much of our current estate, particularly Laravel, alongside WordPress, Magento and TYPO3.

You'll work closely with our Frontend, Full Stack and Infrastructure & Platform Engineers, as well as Account Management. You'll also liaise directly with clients where useful to understand the business context, clarify requirements and explain technical choices clearly.

• Secure handling of authentication, authorisation, secrets and sensitive data.
• Automated testing and quality.
• Diagnosing application and production issues.
• Technical debt and incremental modernisation.
• Contributing to architecture and technical planning.

What we're looking for

You'll already have commercial experience building production web applications and be comfortable taking well-understood backend work from requirement through to production with appropriate support.

Strong PHP experience is particularly relevant to the work we have today, and Laravel experience would be useful. You'll ideally be comfortable with relational databases, APIs, integrations, automated testing, queues, debugging and application performance.

We care particularly about how you think about failure modes, security, data integrity and maintainability. You'll be methodical in investigation, meticulous with data and edge cases, curious about root causes, and entrepreneurial enough to suggest better ways of solving the underlying problem.

We want engineers to own outcomes, not just tasks. Security, testing and performance are part of doing good engineering, not separate stages at the end.

This is a Software Engineer role rather than a junior or senior appointment. We're looking for someone who can work independently on well-understood problems while continuing to grow their technical depth, judgement and ownership.

The salary range for this role is £40,000-£45,000.
