Overview
Bassetlaw is located in North Nottinghamshire, close to the vibrant cities of Sheffield (to the north) and Nottingham (to the south). Bassetlaw district council is committed to providing an extensive range of services to further community involvement. "involve" is a fully hosted and managed solution providing access for both council and community users to share information and improve service delivery.

Challenge
The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) expects each local authority to enpower and support local organisations, community groups and clubs to create and maintain their own information online, including the promotion of job vacancies and events. This is a challenge that many local authorities are unprepared for and is set to add unnecessary burden to already stretched resources. Whilst being robust enough to manage thousands of sites, the system must be simple enough to be used by completely non- technical users. Bassetlaw e-Government officer Russell Burton commissioned 3rd Eye Vision to develop further the involve product following his own research into the alternatives.

Solution
Developed with local authorities for local communities and piloted across 3 counties, the solution is "involve" - a fully hosted and managed system providing access for both council and community users to share information and improve service delivery.

"Simple enough for the knitting group to use" was our intended strapline, but through our work in the community we soon realised how IT savvy many knitting groups are! involve enables any member of a community group to set up their own feature-rich and searchable website, accessible through either the community portal or via its own intelligent URL. The Content Creation Wizard (CCW) creates meaningful content for the site based on the answers to pre-defined questions. Our view is that it is all very well offering a service such as this to community groups, but it is bound to failure unless you can steer them to putting quality content on their sites. In developing the CCW we have also developed the first fully accessible CMS backend for use by the visually impaired.
